Treatment Options

Conservative treatment for contained disc herniation includes bed rest, pain medication, stretching, and cold and/or heat therapy.

Patients who do not respond to conservative treatment may be helped by percutaneous discectomy. This minimally invasive procedure reduces pressure on the nerve root by removing disc nucleus. Percutaneous discectomy is a highly effective approach that completes the continuum of care for patients who want a alternative to surgery.

Benefits of disc decompression include:

  • Significant pain relief[1][2]
  • Maintained annular integrity[1][3][4]
  • Reduced use of analgesics[1][2]
  • Improved quality of life[1][2]
  • Quantifiable disc material removal[2]
  • Less epidural scarring
  • Quick recovery: generally 3 to 5 days
  • Low complication and morbidity rates[5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13]
  • Outpatient procedure requiring only local anesthetic alleviates possible complications of open surgery and general anesthesia

Multiple clinical studies have shown that percutaneous discectomy using the Stryker Dekompressor® is successful for 90% of patients.[14]
