Causes
The lumbar facet joints are formed by the articulations of the superior and inferior articular facets of adjacent vertebrae. They are true joints in that they are lined with synovium and possess a true joint capsule. This capsule is richly supplied with nerves, supporting the theory of the facet joint as a pain generator. The lumbar facet joint is susceptible to arthritic changes and trauma secondary to flexion-extension and torsion injuries. Such damage to the joint results in pain secondary to synovial joint inflammation and adhesions.[1]
