Sacral insufficiency fractures

Sacral fracture

Sacral insufficiency fractures are an often under diagnosed condition in the elderly population, typically presenting with severe low back pain resulting in immobility. The diagnosis can be complicated by the fact that radiographic assessment of the sacrum is difficult and lower spine (lumbar) imaging is frequently not specifically targeted at the sacrum. Today, bone scans using CT can assist with the diagnosis. Fragility fractures are a serious and growing problem for older adults. In fact, 50% of women and 25% of men will have an osteoporotic fracture in their lifetime.1
