Genicular RFA is an option for treating knee pain without surgery. By selectively applying radiofrequency waves to the nerves surrounding the knee, providers can help relieve knee pain due to osteoarthritis. The entire procedure is performed outside the knee joint and may be used for patients that have failed conservative and surgical treatments or are not candidates for surgery.¹

Potential risks of the procedure

There are a few risks associated with genicular RFA and they tend to be rare. The potential risks include, but are not limited to, immediate or delayed allergic reaction to anesthetics/contrast, infection, bleeding, complex regional pain syndrome, temporary increase in pain, and transient facial flushing.⁵
